Back around 2007-2008 when i was using Ubuntu On my MacMini 2.1. for a year or so maybe.
The idea was to stop playing computer games and start learning IT. So i wiped the disks and put Ubuntu on it.
Then at some point when i just started to do some kind of IT (cvo antwerpen) course there was a teacher (Dirk i think), who was also interested to learn/use more about/Linux. So as i have already noticed that Debian is quite an interesting/popular/reliable base i was telling him to try Ubuntu. But there was another guy also at this Office related module i think. He was saying to try Fedora. Only after a few month i ended up in a complete Linux school (Dob Bosco) and used learned Fedora/CentOS.
Now after like 10 years or so of using Ubuntu/Fedora/CentOS on different machines i can here summarize here the two sentences what are basically the main differences between them for me technically.
- Ubuntu/Mint - because it has Debian as the base. Makes it for me sometimes a little bit easier to setup some weird Windows program (diablo 2/3) with Wine/PlayOnLinux, because of MultiArch:
https://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Multilib
So i would say they fit perfect the home use scenario. Like Apple/OSX.
- Fedora/CentOS - then gives the bullet proof security with SELINUX, that can be very useful on your server/workstation: http://cybermatters.info/2014/10/09/shellshock-selinux/
